We only accept original comment pieces and ask that all submissions comply with the following guidelines:

  • Pieces should not exceed 750 words
  • Spell out names rather than using acronyms
  • Links to further reading are permissible provided they are not commercial in nature
  • Generic press releases are not accepted
  • Product promotion is not accepted
  • Comments about events, such as budgets, sporting occasions and international gatherings, need to be submitted during or very shortly after those events to be considered

Dr Mart Kuldkepp

Dr Mart Kuldkepp is an Estonian public commentator and historian born in September 1983. He currently serves as Professor of Estonian and Nordic History at University College London. Between 2011 and 2015, he held various positions at the University of Tartu's Scandinavian studies department, including head of department and programme director. In 2024, he was appointed Visiting Professor at both the University of Tartu and Yale University.

Dr Kuldkepp's research focuses on Estonian and Scandinavian political and cultural contacts in the twentieth century, questions surrounding Estonians' Nordic identity, and Old Norse literature and culture. He defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Tartu in 2014 on Nordic identity and activist regionalism during World War I. His scholarly work has included investigation of Aleksander Kesküla, and in 2015 he received an Emerging Scholar Award from the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies. He is a member of the Estonian student society Veljesto and the Learned Estonian Society. In 2025, Old Street Publishing released his book The Shortest History of Scandinavia. Dr Kuldkepp writes commentary for Comment Central.
