Born on 31 July 1949, Sir Alan dedicated much of his career to representing the interests of his constituents in the East Midlands.

Throughout his parliamentary tenure, Sir Alan witnessed and participated in significant political developments affecting both his constituency and the wider United Kingdom. Throughout his lengthy parliamentary career spanning over three decades, Barron served his South Yorkshire constituency through significant economic and social changes, particularly those affecting former coalfield areas.

During his time in the House of Commons, Sir Kevin developed expertise in health policy and industrial relations, drawing on his background as a former coal industry worker to champion the interests of working-class communities. Following the 2019 general election, Sir Peter became the longest-serving MP in the House of Commons and was styled Father of the House for the duration of that parliament.
