Catherine McKinnell is a British Labour Party politician who has represented Newcastle upon Tyne North as Member of Parliament since 2010. Born on 8 June 1976, she has built her parliamentary career around education and standards in public services. Between 2024 and 2025, McKinnell served as Minister of State for School Standards, a role in which she was responsible for education policy and raising achievement across England's schools.
Throughout her time in Parliament, McKinnell has established herself as a voice on matters affecting her North East constituency and broader policy debates around education reform and public sector delivery. Her ministerial experience in the education brief has given her particular insight into the challenges facing Britain's school system and the policy levers available to government. She now contributes political and policy commentary to Comment Central, bringing her parliamentary expertise and ministerial experience to the site's analysis of current affairs.
