About Sir

Sir Peter James Bottomley is a British Conservative Party politician who served nearly five decades as a Member of Parliament from 1975 until 2024. First elected at a by-election for Woolwich West in 1975, he represented that constituency until its abolition in 1983, then served as MP for Eltham until 1997. He subsequently represented Worthing West from the 1997 general election until his defeat by Labour's Beccy Cooper in 2024, having been returned seven times in that constituency.

Following the 2019 general election, Sir Peter became the longest-serving MP in the House of Commons and was styled Father of the House for the duration of that parliament. He holds the distinction of being the first Father of the House to be unseated at a general election rather than retiring or dying in post. Sir Peter Bottomley writes commentary for Comment Central.
