About Mu

Mu Sochua is a Cambodian politician and rights activist born on 15 May 1954. She served as a Member of Parliament for Battambang during two separate periods, from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2013 to 2017. Between 1998 and 2004, she held the position of Minister of Women and Veterans' Affairs in Hun Sen's coalition government as a member of FUNCINPEC. Following her time with FUNCINPEC, she became affiliated with the Sam Rainsy Party prior to its merger with the Human Rights Party, and subsequently rose to become Vice President of the Cambodia National Rescue Party until that organisation's dissolution.

Her political career has focused on human rights advocacy and women's issues throughout her various parliamentary and ministerial roles. In November 2017, a court ruling imposed a five-year ban from politics on Mu Sochua, making her one of 118 senior opposition figures subject to this restriction. She now contributes political and policy commentary to Comment Central.
